Blog Post #3 - Lighting techniques

In filmmaking, many lighting techniques are used for a variety of reasons in order to create a well made film. Lighting techniques can emphasize objects or people, create certain moods, and make certain scenes more dramatic to appeal better to the audience. A few examples of lighting techniques are key lighting, fill lighting, hard lighting, soft lighting, natural lighting, high key lighting, and low key lighting.

Key lighting is usually the strongest amount of lighting in a scene or photo. In film, key lighting is used to bring attention to a certain detail of a scene. Fill lighting is used to get rid of shadows in a scene that are created from the key lighting. Fill lighting can also help make more elements of the scene more visible to the audience. Hard lighting can be used to focus attention to the main subject of a scene. Hard lighting can also be used to emphasize scenes. Soft lighting is able to get rid of shadows that are produced from other lighting techniques. Soft lighting is mainly used to make characters look more appealing to the audience.

Natural lighting is used in order to make the scene more realistic to the audience. Filmmakers might also consider the time of day that the scene will be filmed in order to get a certain type of lighting from the sun that could create a mood for that scene. High key lighting is used to create a very bright scene that often represents a very delightful mood. High key lighting is also used very often to represent a certain goal that a character would want to achieve. Low key lighting is used to make shadows in a scene. This can help create a dark and gloomy mood in a scene. My project will be using a variety of these lighting elements in order to make my project more appealing. For example, my project will be shot at night time, in order to represent the stereotypical time that robberies occur and there will be barely any natural lighting because it is night time. Key lighting will also be used to bring attention to certain details of my project.
