Blog Post #4 - Stuart Halls representation theory

Stuart Halls representation theory is that in media, certain groups of people are represented in different ways based on the stereotype of that certain group of people. Another idea that Stuart Hall believed is that stereotypes reduce people to assumptions that may not be true. In films, filmmakers will usually use stereotypes in order to represent characters in the film. Sometimes, Filmmakers will include counter stereotypes in their media in order to contradict a certain stereotype that is normally used in other films. A benefit that comes from using counter stereotypes in film is that they can reduce stereotyping towards a certain group of people. Some examples of representations in films are Patriarchy, Multi culturalism, and ageism. In most films the main person in authority is a male. This represents patriarchy by showing a male being in authority. In many films, multiple people of different ethnicities work together in order to achieve a goal. This represents multi culturalism by showing people of different cultures working together. In a decent amount of films an older individual is shown not being capable to perform everything that a younger individual is capable of doing. This represents ageism by showing a younger individual being more qualified to take on tasks that an older individual wouldn't be as qualified to perform.

My project will include elements of Stuart Halls representation theory because I will be using representation throughout my opening sequence. One example of a stereotype that will be represented in my project is patriarchy. In my project the antagonist and protagonist will both be male which represents patriarchy by showing the main characters that have the most impact on the film being male.
