Blog Post #11 - Importance of Foley
In Movies you may hear sound effects like wind and water but some people may wonder "how are these sounds so realistic?" The answer is foley. Foley is when the filmmakers recreate sounds in order to make the sounds sound better, louder or quieter, and more realistic. Foley is important in filmmaking because sometimes some sounds don't sound very realistic so recreating these sounds can make the film feel more realistic to the audience.

An example of foley would be recreating the sound of wind in order to show the audience that the setting of the film is windy. Some ways to create a foley sound of wind is blowing into a straw or releasing air from a plastic bag. Another example of a foley sound would be recreating footsteps. A filmmaker would recreate the sound of footsteps to emphasize the fact that someone is moving and to make the movement sound more realistic to the audience. In order to recreate this sound a foley artist might record themselves stepping on a different floor in order to make the footsteps sound better and more realistic.

In my project I will be using foley sounds of footsteps. I will be recreating the sound of footsteps in order to build more suspense within the audience and make the footsteps sound more realistic. I will also recreate the sound of wind in order to show the audience that it is windy outside.
