Blog post #5 - Attire used in the crime genre
in many crime genre films a certain type of attire is used to portray a villain. In most films that use the crime genre, the criminal usually wears a full black outfit and a black mask in order to protect his identity. The full black outfit is usually used in order to blend in more and not stand out. This is useful for the criminal because if the criminal isn't standing out then that means that the criminal could be able to commit crimes easier and sneakier. This outfit is also a very common stereotype of criminals, so film companies usually use this outfit in order to represent this stereotype. In some films that use the crime genre, the stereotypical outfit may not always be used. For example in "The Batman" the Riddler's outfit is a very unusual full green outfit with a big question mark on it. The reason for this counter stereotypical outfit is to show the audience that this is not a normal criminal and that normal police officers may not be able to stop this criminal.
In my project, I will be using the stereotypical criminal outfit of a full black outfit with a mask, making the criminals face not fully visible and making the criminal blend in better with the time of day being nighttime. I picked the stereotypical criminal outfit because for my film, the criminal represents the stereotype of a real life criminal. The criminals of my film will be the only ones with this outfit so the audience can tell which characters are the criminals and which characters are not criminals. The shoes of the criminals will be black shoes to further emphasize the intent of blending in.
