Blog Post #4 - Stuart Halls representation theory
Stuart Halls representation theory is that in media, certain groups of people are represented in different ways based on the stereotype of that certain group of people. Another idea that Stuart Hall believed is that stereotypes reduce people to assumptions that may not be true. In films, filmmakers will usually use stereotypes in order to represent characters in the film. Sometimes, Filmmakers will include counter stereotypes in their media in order to contradict a certain stereotype that is normally used in other films. A benefit that comes from using counter stereotypes in film is that they can reduce stereotyping towards a certain group of people. Some examples of representations in films are Patriarchy, Multi culturalism, and ageism. In most films the main person in authority is a male.
