Blog post #19- The history of the crime genre

Image
The crime genre has had a big impact on films but what is the history of the genre? Like other genres, the crime genre has a history that makes the crime genre what it is today. I  researched the history of the crime genre on study.com  and one of the pieces of information that I found about the history of the crime genre is that the crime genre started to gain popularity sometime in the 1800's.  The movie poster for Scarface, from  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086250/ In crime genre films, there is usually a crime that has been committed by a criminal. Most of the time the hero or protagonist of these crime genre films will usually find a way to find out who committed this crime in order to arrest them to stop them for committing any more of these crimes. There have been a lot of films throughout the years that have greatly impacted the crime genre. One example of a film that has had a big influence on the crime genre is "Scarface". Scarface is about how Tony...

Blog post #18 - Schedule plan

Image
Whenever someone is making a project, it is a good idea to create a schedule in order to make your project more planned out and organized. My project, just like many other projects will have a schedule in order to be able to have a better idea of when I should finish certain aspects of my project. An example of a work schedule, from  https://www.quidlo.com/blog/types-of-work-schedules/ I should start recording my final project by next week. I want to start recording by this time because I believe that if I start recording by this time then I will have enough time in order to film everything that I would want to be in my film. I want to finish all of my blog posts that I will be posting by march 3rd. I want to also be completely done with my final project by the 3rd of march. By next week I would also want to have a storyboard for my project and a script in order to make the production of my film more efficient. An example of a camera that could be used to film, from  htt...

Blog Post #17 - Media forms

Image
When people watch television, use their phones, or listen to the radio they are exposed to media forms. On these devices there are all kinds of media forms that audiences get exposed to. These media forms can be anything like movies, television shows, newspaper articles or even blogs like this one! In this blog post I will be explaining some of the purposes of these media forms. Movies  The movie poster for Sonic 3, from  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt18259086/ Movies have many purposes for multiple audiences. One of the purposes of movies is to entertain. Movies that are made for entertainment will usually contain a lot of action or fictional stories that can appeal to many audiences. Another purpose of movies can be to inform people about a topic. These type of movies will have less action and more dialogue because of informational topics being explained. Television shows Season 7 show poster for young Sheldon, from  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6226232/ The purposes for...

Blog post #16 - The target audience

Image
When creating a film, one of the things someone should consider is who is the target audience to their film? This is something that I considered while thinking about the process of creating my project. After researching the target audience for crime genre films I found out from www.slideshare.net  that a good estimate of the targeted audience for crime genre films would be late teens to early 30s. The crime genre also appeals to people who enjoy films about solving mysteries and enjoy the action aspects that come from cops catching criminals. A detective board that represents the mystery element of the crime genre, from  https://www.idventure-shop.de/Detective-Stories-Case-2-Antarctic-Fatale-EN_1 The targeted audience for my film is late teens to early twenties. The reasoning for this is because the actors for my film are near this age and the plot of my film seems to appeal more to younger audiences than older audiences. My film will also target people who enjoy action ...

Blog Post #15- Auditions

Image
All films need actors in order to act out characters. Without actors movies wouldn't be able to have any characters! For this reason I told some friends about my project and they were interested in potentially acting in my project.   Reagan This is Reagan, he requested to play the role of D.L's driver and partner in crime in the film. I decided to not pick him for this role because of his low availability to film. While he was performing his audition, he had good acting skills but the low availability to film could stall the time that it takes to complete the project. Brayden   This is Brayden, he requested the role of James (The protagonist). He will not be acting in the film because his acting skills didn't really stick out for this role. Brayden seemed like he would be more fit for a character with more humorous aspects.  Eddie This is Eddie, he is another actor who requested the role of D.L's driver and partner in crime. He will be playing the role in my film. Th...

Blog Post #14- Theme of my project

Image
Themes are very important in films and play a big role in the story elements of a film. The theme of a film is the message that the director wants to give to the audience. A theme to a film could be many things, for example the theme to a film could be, be careful who your trust or the theme could be something that is more general knowledge like breaking the law is bad and will result in punishment. An example of a theme in a film would be that in the movie "Sonic 3" the theme of the film was mainly that teamwork can help you accomplish a goal. This is shown by Sonic and Shadow teaming up in order to stop the Eclipse Cannon from destroying the earth. The video down below is an example from the film that shows Sonic's and Shadow's teamwork. My project will contain multiple themes. The first theme is that being overconfident can lead to mistakes. This theme will be shown in my film by the antagonist being overconfident with his criminal skills which will then lead to t...

Blog Post #13- POV shots

Image
Sometimes when you watch a film you have probably wondered what the movie looks like in the characters point of view. In films there is a shot that allows the audience to see what the character is seeing in the film as if they were the character in the film. This shot is called a POV shot. A POV shot allows the audience to have a better idea of what exactly the character is looking at in the film and what the character is feeling. An example of when a director would use a POV shot is if the director wanted to show the audience a character performing a significant action that has an impact on the film. An example of a POV shot, from  https://www.descript.com/blog/article/point-of-view-shot-why-a-subjective-shot-is-important-in-film In my film I will be using POV shots. My first POV shot will be when the antagonist of my story is stealing valuables from a house. This scene will be paired with an over the shoulder shot in order to show the characters body language while stealing...

Blog Post #12 - Sound element usage in my project

Image
In my project I will be using multiple elements of sounds. These sound elements will be important to the film in order to build suspense, establish the setting, and help the audience understand what is going on throughout the film. My film will be using sound effects, score, dialogue elements, and ambient sounds. very high winds, from  https://mountainhouse.com/blogs/emergency-prep-survival/high-winds-storm-warnings-safety  I will be using synchronous diegetic sound effects of objects being grabbed, doors opening, footsteps, and a sound effect of someone driving a car. These sound effects will be used in order to show the audience what is happening in my project. Some of these sounds will be recreated using foley elements in order to make the sounds sound more realistic to the audience. Score will be used throughout my film in order to build suspense. The score that is used in my film will be able to build suspense within the audience because the score that I will be usi...

Blog Post #11 - Importance of Foley

Image
In Movies you may hear sound effects like wind and water but some people may wonder "how are these sounds so realistic?" The answer is foley. Foley is when the filmmakers recreate sounds in order to make the sounds sound better, louder or quieter, and more realistic. Foley is important in filmmaking because sometimes some sounds don't sound very realistic so recreating these sounds can make the film feel more realistic to the audience. Foley artists at work, from  https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-a-foley-artist/ An example of foley would be recreating the sound of wind in order to show the audience that the setting of the film is windy. Some ways to create a foley sound of wind is blowing into a straw or releasing air from a plastic bag. Another example of a foley sound would be recreating footsteps. A filmmaker would recreate the sound of footsteps to emphasize the fact that someone is moving and to make the movement sound more realistic to the audience. In ord...

Blog post #10 - Props used in the crime genre

Image
In films, props can be used to show certain elements of a story and props can also be used to show specific details of certain characters. In crime genre films, many props are used throughout the film. Some props that a criminal would normally have in a crime genre film would be some sort of weapon. this weapon could be something like a gun or a knife or even an explosive.  An example of prop money, from  https://www.examiner-enterprise.com/story/news/2016/07/27/movie-prop-money-floating-around/27336992007/ After researching the website  https://ellabrowna2media.weebly.com/costume-and-prop-conventions.html  I was able to find more information about props used in the crime genre. Weapon props are used in crime genre films because criminals usually need weapons in order to commit the crime that they are trying to commit. In crime genres, since there are weapons, fake blood would usually be required in these type of films because without this fake blood, attacking...

Blog Post #9 - Main hero analysis

Image
For my project, the hero will be briefly shown near the middle of the film and at the end of the film. In my film, the hero will be an ordinary guy who after getting robbed, seeks revenge on whoever committed this crime. The hero also wants to stop this criminal from committing anymore crimes. The costuming that will be used for the hero will be a casual and normal outfit. The hero of my story will be named James. Even though the hero is barely shown in the film, the hero will still have an important role in my project because the hero will be the one who stops D.L from committing crimes. The audience will be able to know that James is the hero because of the angles and editing techniques that will be used while James is on screen.  A man standing outside of his house, from  https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/man-standing-in-front-of-house-at-night At the end of the film when James is on screen, a low angle shot will be used in order to make James seem more menacing and to sho...

Blog post #8 - The setting for my project

Image
My project will be filmed on my road and inside my house. The project will be filmed at night time. The reason for my project being filmed at night is because at night there is close to no natural lighting at all. I wanted to incorporate this low amount of lighting in order to build suspense and fear within the audience and to represent the stereotype of crimes happening at nighttime. In most films, a crime will usually occur at night time instead of during the day. When filming my project, almost every single light will be off in my house in order to also have the effects that low natural lighting gives. This low lighting will also help signify that it is night time and represent the stereotype of people sleeping at later hours of the day with their lights turned off.  This setting fits in with the crime genre because most crime genre films usually have very low ambient lighting and when the crime is being committed in the film it is usually filmed at nighttime. An example of thi...

Blog Post #7 - Main villain analysis

Image
In my film, there will be a main villain which is the robber that robs the house in the film. The robber will go by the initials D.L in order to hide his real name and identity. D.L will be shown throughout the film in an all black outfit with a mask to cover his face. This was my outfit choice for D.L because that is the stereotypical outfit of criminals. The backstory of D.L is that he is one of the best criminals that has not been caught by the police because of his mastermind criminal skills. My opening scene will showcase D.L by showing him robbing a house of valuable items and treating this robbery like it was an easy task. At the end of the opening scene, D.L will leave the crime scene thinking that he will never get caught but we are then shown the hero looking out of his window. This shows the audience that the hero will try to take down D.L. This also shows the audience that the hero will cause D.L some trouble. A criminal in a relatively dark area, from  https://ea...

Blog Post #6 - Preliminary Exercise

Image
This picture is a two shot showing 2 people in a playful mood. This is shown by one person spraying the other person with a water bottle. Two shots are used to show 2 characters of a film and the interactions that they are having. Two shots can be helpful in showing audiences the reactions that 2 characters have when interacting with one another. This can also show the audience a characters opinion on another character. This is a picture of a dining room with very low fill lighting within the whole dining room. There are no light sources visible within the picture. Settings with low fill lighting are used in crime genre films in order to build suspense, fear, and mysteriousness within the audience. My film will almost be completely filmed with low fill lighting throughout the whole film in order to build these emotions that come from low fill lighting settings. This is a picture of a red light source. Red lighting sources are usually used in romance genre films because red lighting usu...

Blog post #5 - Attire used in the crime genre

Image
in many crime genre films a certain type of attire is used to portray a villain. In most films that use the crime genre, the criminal usually wears a full black outfit and a black mask in order to protect his identity. The full black outfit is usually used in order to blend in more and not stand out. This is useful for the criminal because if the criminal isn't standing out then that means that the criminal could be able to commit crimes easier and sneakier. This outfit is also a very common stereotype of criminals, so film companies usually use this outfit in order to represent this stereotype. In some films that use the crime genre, the stereotypical outfit may not always be used. For example in "The Batman" the Riddler's outfit is a very unusual full green outfit with a big question mark on it. The reason for this counter stereotypical outfit is to show the audience that this is not a normal criminal and that normal police officers may not be able to stop this crim...
